“Motor Control” is an expression of movement that is only partially…about the motor
While we have known for decades that movement is an interaction of person-task-environment (oversimplified), we still call the control of movement, “motor control”. Why? Many motors actually move in a very predictable pattern without much variability at all. That is neither representative-of or an admirable quality for the human movement system. I will not be so bold as to offer an absolute answer to what term is better than motor control, but in early morning writings today I have been toying with “Interactive Control”. Open to thoughts about this term and about my “issue” with motor control.
This is an excellent point that I think most of us know intuitively and yet it has never occurred to me how the term “motor control” does not really fit at all with what we think we are describing. “Interactive Control” is not bad, but part of the issue is that there are both many levels and loci of control. “Interactive” reflects the trans-dynamic nature of the process, but not the levels or loci. Anyway, I’ll be thinking about this for a while!
